Short Essay Answer (Final)
In the final project of Kevin Kelly, Michael Brown, and Robert Lynch, titled "For the Win," they showcased primarily the concept of 1) leadroom. The video featured a football receiver running out to catch a ball. The shot focused on the area in front of the receiver, showing what was ahead of him, not behind. For sports in particular, this is useful in giving audiences a view of what lies in front of a player, rather than just focusing in on that one player and giving us an incomplete picture. This project also showed off a continuous 2) extreme long-shot. Because this short video centered on a football play, it assumed the camera style seen in typical sports games. As such, the receiver appeared very far from the actual camera, and his whole body could be seen amidst the large field. This long shot gives audience a clear view of where the player is in relationship to the rest of the action on the field. "For the Win" also used 3) slow-motion to dramatize the actual catching of the ball. It also added a feeling of humor in its emphasis on drama. The slow-motion carried over into the replaying the team did of the actual catch. So it was this extended use of slow-motion and replay that ended the video.
In Adolfo Arrieta and Steve Aponte, Steve M.'s slideshow on Safe Walking, they showed not video, but still images. And with their images they used 4) black-and-white filters to display a very muted, silent-film approach. This was emphasized by the use of slides featuring written dialogue. All together, it felt like a very old-school film. Telling a story with images, the team used constant 5) close-ups for reaction shots from the "actors" being photographed. Almost every shot featured a close-up of one person or another, focusing necessarily on their faces to tell the story. Facial expressions made up for the audible dialogue you'd hear in actual video.
